The 2014 CRT Resurce Challenge.

And...  Queue theme music!

The CRT Resource Challenge is on for 2014!  This isn't a competition, there are no judges and there are NO losers!  We always try our best to put on events where everyone can win just by participating.  It's all about challenging ourselves to strut our stuff and finding out what we're really made of!

You are invited to run yourself through the challenge whether you are a member of the Wodonga CRT Support Network or not and, although not required, we'd be really interested to see what you come up with!

The idea is to use a single "thing" and to make as many resources based on that "thing" as you possibly can.  Grade levels and teaching arenas are entirely up to you.  Are you educating primary?  Secondary? Adult Education?  Tutoring?  You could even be delivering PD for other teachers!  Spread your wings and push yourself a little bit out of your comfort zone.

This is not something you "enter", it's something you do.  Although we appreciate knowing how many people are on board, it's most certainly not necessary for you to contact us.  The reflection questions will be posted on the blog available to all the same as the Challenge itself has been.  What we do suggest though is that you share with someone and approach this at least partially in a collegial way.  Whether it be us here at the Wodonga CRT Support Network, another CRT Network you belong to, a Facebook group or any other avenue.

While you don't need to "enter" we do appreciate knowing you're participating and love to hear about what CRTs are up to!  You can comment here on the blog, email us at wodongacrt@vit.vic.edu.au or just discuss what you're doing on the various Facebook groups we've plonked this one down in.  Have a blog?  Chronicle your progress there and email us the web address!
I'll be making a Vlog on my personal blog about my progress too, the more the merrier!

To get the ball rolling:

So what sort of things could you use?
  • a book or a pamphlet
  • a song or a poem
  • a YouTube/Teachertube/Vimeo video
  • a personal education-related story or family activity.
  • a news article
  • a common household item (such as the ever popular Bottle Tops)
  • Pop Culture  (eg Urban Legends)
  • A sport or outdoor activity.
  • BE CREATIVE!

What sort of things could you produce?
  • traditional lesson plans
  • Worksheets or activity plans
  • A Video with activities
  • Educational games or puzzles
  • PowerPoint or Prezi presentations
  • An activity book for the Museum.
  • BE CREATIVE.

Samples from last year's results;

Patty Pans: 8 activities related to patty pans and/or cooking.

This one was an interesting one.  Patty pans used in teaching time, seasons and phases of the moon.  Using Patty Pans to make 3D objects.   Patty pans also bring to mind images of Baking so is used to link to the Occupation of Baker.  In the same vein, the story of The Little Red Hen culminates in baking.  Then, to finish with a song, there's "Pat a cake".

A lot of different concepts to be had, all linked together by patty pans!

All About Pears7 activities related to a "fresh food update" in a Woolworths catalogue.

This one isn't as exciting (and it's mine so I can be critical without offending anyone) because I have a distinct blind spot when it comes to creating worksheets.  That's perfectly ok though because one of the the ideas was to push ourselves into unfamiliar territory as much as anything else.  I DID carry on with this one after the 2013 Resource challenge though and ended up turning everything into a 46 activity rubric-like resource with a bit of randomness thrown is with activities revolving around Literacy, Maths, Geography and science.

Please note; the samples are sparse intentionally.  We urge you to take it as far as you want to but don't feel like you have to produce a bazillion resources either!

Challenge duration:

The challenge is running from NOW until the 14th of May.
When it's done, along with the reflection questions, we'll have some suggestions on how you can share what you've created with other CRTs (if you would like to) as well as how to protect your work when you want it known far and wide that it's you who created it.

For the members of the Wodonga Network this is the date of the May meeting.  This gives us the April meeting to discuss our ongoing efforts collegially and share them in May.  If you're not in the Wodonga Network then your own Network, Facebook groups and the like can give you an excellent avenue to seek collegial feedback/input on what you're creating.

Ownership of the resources created;

Even if you share what you've done with us all of your creations remain YOUR property at all times.  Even if you would like our help to share it with others the same applies.  It's YOUR work and YOU deserve the credit!

Remember:-  this isn't about winning, producing the most impressive results or even producing lots of resources, it's all about exploring yourself as a Teacher!  Don't feel you need to pour your soul into it to the exclusion of everything else, spend only the time on it that you have to spare, we've all got lives after all!

Just like last year, when we've wrapped it all up we're going to provide some activities so you can use what you've created a reflection tool to help us sort out our strengths from our weaknesses.  For this reason we suggest logging the time you spend on this activity (more on this later).

A special note for Victorian Provisionally registered CRTs!

This year's CRT Resource Challenge comes with it's own, absolutely FREE, alterior motive!  We invite you to participate and consider it especially worth your while when seeking full registration in the future.  We are also particularly interested in what you have created in this challenge whether you wish us to share it or keep it to ourselves.

Want to make your stuff look slick but can't afford Microsoft Office or similar commercial software?  Try OpenOffice, a free and powerful open-source office suite. Not having money to spend on software doesn't mean you can't make your own professional looking resources!
